The Weekly Welcome 11 Sept 1878 Bottom
It may be a few lines from this township might interest the readers of our paper. Perhaps it is not known to very many of them that just at present we are having quite an excitement over the oil question, several hundred acres of land has been leased and drilling has been commenced in earnest, penetrating the solid rock from fifteen to twenty feet per day. A depth of a hundred and twenty feet has already been reached with some show of oil and a considerable amount of gas. And the prospecsums to be encouraging. The oil found is of a superiour quality and it would not be very surdrising it Rock Creek should become one of the important oil producting towns in the county. It is very dry and vegetation is suffering for want of rain. Large fires have broken out in the west part of the township and have burned over considerable teritory and unless we get rain soon it is feared will do much damage to standing timber.
Sept. 3. More anon, David
