Ashtabula County Bicentennial 2011

29th Regement O. V. I. Left Camp Chase 17 Jan 1862

The Twenty Ninth.

Last week we had a report of the starting of the Twenty-ninth under orders for Virginia, and the countermanding of those orders. On Friday last they did march in good earnest, in company with there other Regiments, for Romney, Virginia, to join the Federal forces there. They left Columbus at 3 P. M. on Friday, in good order and fine sprites, though they had not been paid off. This move will be very likely to having them into active service. Shortly before they left Camp Chase, they settled their organization, by the final election of officers. At a formal election, Major Clark was chosen Lt. Colonel. To fill the vacancy by the promotion of Capt. Clemmer, as Major, Lieutenant Wright was commissioned Captain of company G, Sergeant Major Williamson taking his place as Lieutenant. Orderly Russell was promoted to the post of Sergeant Major, which completed the changes. We hope to hear from the Boys in a few days, from their new quarters.
