On Wednesday, April 14, 2010 the Ashtabula County Genealogical Society (ACGS) took a field trip to Lake View Cemetery, Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. Lake View is a 285 acre cemetery and outdoor museum. The weather was perfect for such a trip, the flowering trees, tulips and especially daffodil hill were gorgeous. We arrived early, stopping at the office to pick up maps and a CD (there is a small fee of $5.00) The CD is about a 30 minute driving tour which was interesting but it was hard to follow. We found the maps that were given to us easier to get where we wanted to go.
The first stop was President James A. Garfield monument the final resting place of the 20th President of the United States and his family. the monument was paid for by citizens of the US and dedicated in 1890. It rests on the highest point in the cemetery. This monument has a basement where the caskets of the President and his wife are found. On the first floor there is a statue which is the likeness of the President and the second floor balcony, visitors can view downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie. A guide is posted here from April 1 the November 19.
