Orwell Business in 1878 Part 2

The Wekly Welcome Sep. 25,1878

The Weekly Welcome Sep. 25, 1878 bottom

We have two CHURCHES. A Methodest and Presbyterian. The buildings are commodions and, especially the latter, is among the finest in the country. Each church sustains regular preaching, as well as a large sabbath school.

Our HOTELS are first class. R. E. Stone keeps opposite the Empire block and his well filled house with the traveling public, speaks of his popularity as a landlord. The Orwell House is kept by Tom Rex, and is rapidly recovering from its rundown condition in which he found it. Mr. Rex is a wholesouled fellow and has traveled enough during the past fifteen years to know how to serve his guests.

We have two DRUG STORES. Mrs. S. A.  Babcock keeps a neat and tidy drug and grocery store just east of the Orwell House. She has a host of friends and is called “Aunt Ann” by more people, little and big than any other person in this part of the country. W. B. Stone is a scientific druggist, having attended the college of pharmacy at Philadelphia, and we are in hopes he will let the people know something about the drug business.

CARRIAGE AND WAGON SHOP. B. H. Staley, in a quite way is building a great many fine vehicles which always give the best of satisfaction.

BLACKSMITH SHOP. Irving Johnson has a enviable reputation as a blacksmith in all its departments. As a horse shoer he stands at the head of his profession.

Our HARDWARE STORE kept by E. P. Goodrich, is one of Orwell’s permanent institutions. Mr. Goodrich is a square, honest dealer; was raised in our community; and is highly esteemed for his upright business habits.

Mr. W. S. Jones our FURNITURE dealer, keeps a good assortment of every thing in his line. He is not only an adept at his trade, but is a well informed person and much respected in our community.

We have three SHOE SHOPS under the supervision of T. H. Covert, J. Somerwill and S. E. Hall. They are kept busy all the time, which is a good recommendation of their workmanship.

The SPOKE AND AXE HELVE FACTORY owned and carried on by A. P. Blanchard & Co., is doing a thriving business. The proprietors are both young men, with good business abilities, and from the demand of their factory products, it speaks well of their work.

Our BOX FACTORY planing mill and grist mill, owned by Bower & McMahan, is an indispensable institution, and adds greatly to the prosperity of Orwell. It was established by Wm. F. Bedell some years ago and it is now in the hands of energetic up-in-the-morning men.

MILLINERS. Mrs. Tracy, Miss Bragg & Mrs. Babcock, Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Phelps are supplying our community with as tastily made and trimmed hats and bonnets as can be found in  the county.

DRESSMAKING is carried on by the Misses Way, Miss Gilmore, Miss Klipp, Miss Brinkerhoff & Mrs. C. R. Stone, to the satisfaction of their patrons.
